Help your Helpers.

When asking for help, we often try to make it easier on our potential helper by asking what we think is the simple question. But when most of us hear the request, "will you help me move some furniture?" our brains goes to that place of "uh-oh" and start thinking: "How big is this move? How long is this gonna take? I bet she wants me to do this on Thursday when I already have plans! Where are we… etc!" There’s a better way to ask, a way that will get better results. Give your potential helper the SPECIFICS. Try something like this, "Will you help me get two pieces of furniture onto a truck this Saturday at 1pm? We’re meeting at my place, it shouldn’t take more than a two hours and I will reward you with gelato!" Now that we know the when, where and how long it will take, we can say "yes," "no" or "could we meet at 3pm?" with confidence and commitment. Helpers love to help when they know what they are commiting to… and of course, gelato helps too!

As well as life and career coaching, Brian Patacca works as an actor, television host and spokesperson. He is the founder of Actor Salon and a contributing expert to Backstage‘s advice column.

Brian credits his background for much of his coaching intuition: a Northwestern University Theatre Degree, marketing and business skills from Serino Coyne Advertising Agency, career consulting around the globe with TVI Actors Studio. His experience combined with his curiosity, undying enthusiasm, bossy know-how and generous empathy make him a natural coach. He continues to hone his skills with ongoing professional life coach training at CTI.

Brian starred Off-Broadway in The Donkey Show, appeared on stages in London, Dublin, regionally in the U.S. and internationally with the boy band, The Honeyboys. Television appearances as an actor and host include Desperate Housewives, Guiding Light, Ringer, Design Crazy, Creative Ideas and over 70 commercials. A voracious reader, spin instructor and party host, Brian’s always starting (and finishing!) something new. His latest event, Boyfriend, takes dating offline.

A fast-paced and innovative evening where you’ll align your career and life and hone your tools so that your business is productive while inspiring your artistic spirit. Identify your specific brand and create a monthly marketing plan that’s simple, cost-effective and will help to actually book jobs! Create dynamic, exciting six month goals and take the first steps to achieve them. Actor Salon will guide you in your choices with all of your actor marketing tools – your headshot, resume, reel, clips, postcard, website, one-sheet, cast-ability sheet and more. We will identify your personal marketing targets including past (and future!) industry contacts. You’ll leave with practical ideas and advice to ensure that you market your actor essence and get in the door.

Here’s the 411…
The Brians have been career coaching since 2000. They coach one-on-one and teach small, weekly Actor Accountability Salons. In both settings, The Brians approach the actor as an individual; you will be given practical, specific things to do to take control of your career…and kick it in the butt. What’s ailing your career? Let’s find the cure! The Brians approach to the business of acting is simple: give a man a fish and he’ll eat for a day, but teach a man to fish and he’ll eat for a lifetime. You will be taught how to get (more) work now and to launch a career that will last a lifetime.
